A well-crafted CV is your first impression with a Scandinavian employer. Learn what to include, what to leave out, and how to present your experience in a way that resonates with Nordic hiring managers.

Keep It Concise and Relevant

Scandinavian employers generally prefer CVs that are no longer than two pages. Unlike some markets where a lengthy CV signals experience, Nordic hiring managers value clarity and relevance above all. Focus on your most recent and most relevant positions, and avoid padding your CV with roles that do not contribute to the position you are applying for.

Include a Professional Photo — But Keep It Simple

Unlike in some countries where photos on CVs are discouraged, it is common and accepted practice in Scandinavia to include a professional headshot. The photo should be recent, professionally taken or at least professionally presented, and show you in appropriate attire. Avoid casual selfies or cropped group photos.

Highlight Practical Skills and Certifications

Scandinavian employers place high value on practical, verifiable skills. If you hold relevant certifications — such as forklift licenses, healthcare qualifications, or IT certifications — these should be prominently featured. Include the issuing body and the date of certification so that employers can verify them if needed.

Be Honest About Language Skills

Language proficiency is taken seriously in Scandinavian hiring processes. Use recognized frameworks such as the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) to describe your language levels accurately. Overstating your language ability is one of the most common mistakes candidates make, and it can create significant difficulties once you are in the role.

Tailor Each Application

A generic CV sent to multiple employers is far less effective than a tailored application. Take the time to read each job description carefully and adjust your CV to reflect the specific skills and experience the employer is looking for. A short, targeted cover letter accompanying your CV can also significantly improve your chances of being invited for an interview.
